Arcem’s sophomore release “Arrival at Grief” is a concept album with each track being characterized by one of the six stages of grief. Lyrically, it was born out of the dissolution of a failing relationship but it covers other ideas such as self discovery, solitude, and the absolution of the human condition. Musically, it’s a demonstration of the quartet honing their sound not only progressively and stylistically but simultaneously making it straightforward and more accessible and precise. Vocally, this album has all the makings of the first but with venturing into new territories for the band such as singing and multiple part harmonies but of course there still are the screams and deep bellowed barks of one person seeking answers and acceptance. Over the course of the record it seems as if the guitar playing is not only interwoven between Babe Woodward and Dave McKie but they also have an unspoken conversation between their complimentary guitar parts. Matthew Pressel continues to deliver on his articulation and catchy bass grooves all the while giving the crushing low end he is known for. Last but certainly not least, Scott Kooima’s performance on this record is on another tier from their previous album. So effortlessly finding the pocket of each song and thriving in it, some may view his playing as idiosyncratic but is key component to Arcem’s sound. This is one album that should not be taken lightly as this is your arrival at grief.
